Team Evan is a short documentary that introduces us to the remarkable Evan St. Amant through the eyes of his mother and primary caregiver Marilyn. In addition to the challenges any teenager faces, 19 year-old Evan St. Amant also lives with Autism, Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL), developmental disabilities and Type 1 Diabetes. Amplifying the difficulty of living with these illnesses is that Evan is nonverbal and has difficulty with mobility. His mother Marilyn helps Evan navigate through his day to day life as best she can. However, every day is a struggle. In an effort to relieve some of the daily stresses related to Evan’s care, the St. Amants are seeking to bring a new family member into their home; a diabetic alert dog who can sense the changes in Evan’s blood chemistry.
Through their journey they have reached out to Christine Einboden of Medical Sniffer Dogs, who specializes in the training of services dogs specifically for those with Type 1 Diabetes. In this film, we meet Christine who sheds some light on diabetic alert dogs and the impact they can have on a family, as well as some of Evan’s team; Pediatrician Dr. Cara Davidson and Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Educator Erin Thomson, who discuss the challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes, especially for Evan, and why bringing this special friend into Evan’s family would not only give him a sense of companionship but would save his life more times than one can count.
In making the film, producers Nate Lacroix and Deanna Palazzo quickly learned how special Evan really is. Having the opportunity to spend time with Evan and Marilyn and speak with their team as well as other support in their lives has been an absolute joy and an experience they will never forget. They got to see first hand how much love surrounds Evan’s life and how much happiness he brings to so many people, and can only hope that this film will articulate that same joy to others.
